Unusual rig new Antony Gormley Project - One & Other
July 6th 2009
Every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days, a different person will step up to the Fourth Plinth on Trafalgar Square and help make a living portrait of the UK. Unusual Rigging has provided the technical infrastructure for this event.
The project One & Other is devised by Antony Gormley and is presented by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts. Unusual’s role involved the design, manufacture and installation of a safety net around the plinth. Unusual also devised the means for participants accessing the plinth, a JCB Telehandler with a custom built cage and provided the reception and media facility on the south west corner of Trafalgar Square.
Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo
May 13th – 16th 2009
Following on from 2008, Unusual provided the structure from which the sound and screens were suspended. This year, the stage was modified slightly with a new roof and extra depth. Two Layher towers were erected at the opposite end of the arena for sound and lighting and Unusual commissioned and installed a new control box over the main entrance. The backdrop design concept was by Misty Buckley with production and installation by Unusual Rigging. Follow spot towers were installed on top of the staging structure, with scissor lift access for Royal Marines, who abseiled down the front of the backdrop during the performance.
Unusual Rigging suspend McLaren in Science Museum
Over the years, Unusual Rigging has displayed many large items in an unconventional manner. We hang aircraft in positions to create the illusion of flight, we suspend valuable museum artefacts in mid air to optimise viewing positions and we display vehicles in every possible orientation. From a structural perspective, none of these items were ever designed to be suspended. If one tries to lift an aeroplane by the wings, it is more than likely that something will bend or break. Turn a car upside down, hang it by the wheels and a few surprises are inevitable. Unusual Rigging specialise in carrying out a wide range of complex display work without the surprises. An enormous amount of survey and structural engineering work goes on in the background, whilst the riggers on site benefit from an unparalleled level of experience.
