Over the years, Unusual Rigging has displayed many large items in an unconventional manner. We hang aircraft in positions to create the illusion of flight, we suspend valuable museum artefacts in mid air to optimise viewing positions and we display vehicles in every possible orientation. From a structural perspective, none of these items were ever designed to be suspended. If one tries to lift an aeroplane by the wings, it is more than likely that something will bend or break. Turn a car upside down, hang it by the wheels and a few surprises are inevitable. Unusual Rigging specialise in carrying out a wide range of complex display work without the surprises. An enormous amount of survey and structural engineering work goes on in the background, whilst the riggers on site benefit from an unparalleled level of experience. The Science Museum has a new exhibition starting March 11th 2009 and running into April 2010 for which Unusual Rigging have suspended a McLaren upside down. The work was carried out overnight to avoid disruption to normal Museum business. The entire solution comprising survey, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, drawings, fabrication of bracketry and installation was carried out by the team at Unusual Rigging.
