Unusual Theatre Rigging - How it all works - Autumn 2008

Oliver!, Imagine This, Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia! and Cats
Our theatre work breaks down into three main parts: Touring, West End shows and stage engineering. The first two components concern making the creative product - the show - work in a venue and the third component addresses the need to make venue work better when receiving the creative product.

The creative team are those with the vision of the experience that they wish to deliver to the audience. The degree of technical understanding amongst creative teams varies enormously, so the process of realising the vision falls in the first place to the chief interpreter, otherwise known as the production manager. The production manager has a wide range of technical experts ‘on-call’. This is where Unusual Rigging fits into the picture.

Lord Mayors Show November 2008

Unusual Rigging installed a truss arch to span Princes Street for The Corporation of London for the Lord Mayors Show. Preassembled into sections to fit a flatbed, the arch was erected in less than two hours on site. Branding was applied and the BBC suspended a remote controlled camera from the arch. Further work was undertaken by Unusual for the Territorial Army’s TA100 campaign. Branding was applied to site structures and also parade vehicles.

La Machine – Liverpool 08

Presenting La Machine, Liverpool’s most memorable European Capital of Culture event produced by Artichoke and technically co-ordinated by Unusual, was a massive challenge. Unusual proved that an energetic mix of lateral and innovative thinking, technical expertise, close teamwork and engaging individuals with a dynamic range of skills and personalities from a wide variety of backgrounds to get behind the project can be a hugely rewarding exercise.

RAF Museum Cosford - a rigging perspective

On the face of it, the suspension of aircraft at RAF Cosford looked like a very tough challenge. Starting with the obvious, these are extremely heavy aircraft.

RAF Museum Cosford - NOW OPEN

Following a major installation programme by Unusual Rigging, February 2007 marks the grand opening of The National Cold War Exhibition, the first major and permanent exhibition to focus solely on the Cold War story.

Revealing tensions that tormented the great super powers as well as the people of the world for a large part of the 20th century, this exciting new exhibition hall marks the biggest ever expansion in the history of the Royal Air Force Museum.

Covering over 8,000 square metres, the new landmark building is a highly innovative design by architects Fielden, Clegg, Bradley, with exhibition design by Neal Potter. The exhibition takes the form of two massive triangles divided by a central walkway, representing a world divided by opposing ideologies of the democratic countries and the communist bloc.

Christmas decorations in Heathrow Terminal 5

Unusual Rigging has installed Terminal 5’s Christmas decorations in a week of overnight shift work. Twelve large inflatable globes with a variety of lighting effects now hang in the terminal building. Suspended on a Prolyte H40V 16m span truss grid, Unusual made bespoke steel wire rope assemblies on site to hang the globes in the desired orientation.
