Design Engineer / Draughtsman
Unusual Rigging is a specialist supplier to the theatre, entertainment, sports, exhibition, TV and presentation industries. We are looking for a design draftsman with a mechanical engineering bias to work in our thriving design department.The Design Engineering department is responsible for working with clients and in-house Project Managers to design and deliver practical engineering solutions for a remarkable variety of challenging briefs. Ranging from simple truss arrangements in 2D to complete stage engineering designs in 3D, the Design Engineering department is a key element of Unusual’s unique portfolio of services.
Working as part of a highly motivated team, reporting directly to the departmental manager, the role will be to produce high quality, workable designs in both 2D and 3D using the latest versions of Autodesk Inventor Professional and AutoCAD Mechanical. This will involve analysis of the client brief; liaison and coordination with customers, suppliers, fabrication and installation teams; production of general arrangement and detailed design drawings; site surveying and marking-out; managing and prioritising a varied workload and working in a flexible but focused manner.
On-the-job training will be provided and an appetite to learn will be expected. The role has the possibility of growing with the successful candidate.
The successful applicant must have good knowledge and experience of:
- AutoCAD Mechanical
- Inventor Professional
- Microsoft Windows and Excel.
It will be an advantage to have experience of:
- Steel Wire Rope assemblies
- Lifting equipment including winches
- Structural engineering
- Site surveys.
- A willingness to learn under supervision
- Good communication and presentation skills
- A flexible problem-solving approach to tasks
- Calmness under pressure
- Good people skills
- Patience and self-motivation
- Mature personality and ability to work autonomously
- A head for heights.

Lifting Equipment Service Engineer
We currently have an opening for a lifting equipment service engineer.
You should have knowledge of:
- Theatre installation and operation
- LOLER - Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations
- PUWER - Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations
Familiarity with Liftket, CM and Verlinde chain hoists would be an advantage.
