Theatre Royal Drury Lane:

A Major Transformation Delivered with Care and Technical Expertise

Unusual Rigging oversaw three years of project management and two years on site to guide this Grade I listed theatre through a complete operational transition, from the derig of 42nd Street to the installation of Frozen immediately after handover.

The team remodelled the entire stage house above stage level, installing a new high-capacity steel grid, up to 100 counterweight sets, three galleries and a 60-minute fire curtain.

A bespoke temporary jacking system enabled essential structural strengthening while protecting the historic fabric, and more than 15 tonnes of material were recovered for curation, reuse or repurposing to support the project’s sustainability goals.

Paddington The Musical:

Rigging Within the Savoy's Tight Constraints

At the Savoy Theatre, where low rigging height and tight working space shape every decision, Unusual Rigging delivered a tailored package of engineered solutions for the production.

The team designed, fabricated and installed all rigging systems, developing flying, automation and bespoke elements suited to the theatre's constraints.

Working closely with the production team, they created a system that maximised both height and floor space while maintaining safety and efficiency. Much of the rig relies on traditional counterweight sets, many fitted into gaps only slightly larger than the equipment itself.

The compact grid, located directly beneath the Savoy Hotel's swimming pool, demanded precise planning and careful load management. The result is a reliable, high-performance rigging environment that supports the production's full technical scope.

Star In Motion:

A Landmark Achievement in Extreme-Height Engineering

Star in Motion, a world-record-breaking spectacle created by Koert Vermeulen, was designed to shine 300 metres above Riyadh at the summit of Kingdom Centre during the city’s annual festival of light and art.

Unusual Rigging delivered the installation with exceptional precision, suspending the 5.5-tonne structure on four 100 mm Dyneema ropes, each with a 490-tonne breaking load. To ensure absolute stability, the team applied 50 tonnes of tension, keeping the star perfectly positioned high above the city skyline.

Every aspect of the project demanded meticulous planning, from structural calculations and load management to installation logistics and safety procedures, all carried out while working hundreds of metres above ground level.

Eton College Salata Auditorium:

Engineering Flexibility for Exceptional Performance

Unusual Rigging delivered a bespoke suite of stage engineering, lifting, seating and acoustic systems to create a fully adaptable performance environment for the Salata Auditorium at Eton College. The installation enables rapid transitions between multiple staging and acoustic formats, supporting a wide range of performance and teaching needs.

A goods-rated forestage lift was engineered to handle heavy staging elements, including two seating wagons, while maintaining safe separation from personnel. A fully interlocked tilting lift allows the auditorium floor to move smoothly between flat and raked configurations. A retractable riser system across the first four choir levels provides both open and staged layouts.

The team also installed a motorised projection screen system with a roof-mounted pile-wind winch, steel-wire drop system, motorised cable reeler and portable hand controller. Acoustic performance was enhanced through the installation of 12 mm polycarbonate reflectors, engineered specifically for the space. The result is a highly responsive auditorium designed to support outstanding performance in every configuration.

Harrier and Jaguar:

Re-engineering Iconic Aircraft for Tate Britain

Harrier and Jaguar, Fiona Banner's striking installation for the second-floor galleries at Tate Britain, required the careful handling and reconstruction of two decommissioned fighter jets.

The Harrier was suspended from the gallery roof while the Jaguar was balanced inverted on the floor, each demanding absolute precision in both engineering and presentation. As neither aircraft could enter the building intact, both were cut into transportable sections and seamlessly reassembled inside the gallery, supported by additional internal steelwork designed and installed for the project. The installation turned out to be a strong technical piece, carried out carefully and true to the artist's vision.

Crossroads Pantomimes:

Nationwide Delivery on an Exceptional Scale

Unusual Rigging partnered with Crossroads Pantomimes to deliver sixteen productions across the UK during the 2025 festive season, a programme that demanded detailed design work, precise scheduling and tightly coordinated logistics.

Across the run, the team supplied 407 chain hoists, including 92 Kinesys-controlled variable-speed units, along with 26 metres of ladder beam and 610 metres of aluminium truss to support flying effects, scenery and special effects. Rigging solutions were also developed for specialist elements such as tightrope effects and a 14-metre inflatable beanstalk. Technical planning began in May, with preparation through the summer and on-site delivery from November, ensuring every production opened safely, smoothly and to the highest standard.
